Police Investigate Shooting Death Near Scene of Fatal Collision in San Leandro

Police this morning are investigating a shooting death on Interstate Highway 880 in San Leandro.

Officers with the San Leandro Police Department responded at 12:55 a.m. to assist the California Highway Patrol on a report of a multi-vehicle crash on the highway near Marina Boulevard, police said.

After arriving, the CHP assumed the investigation of the crash and the San Leandro officers left the scene. Police said a pedestrian was killed in the collision.

At 2:10 a.m., CHP officers still at the scene heard gunshots fired north of their location near the Marina Boulevard off-ramp. They came across a vehicle parked on the right-hand shoulder just north of the Marina Boulevard overpass, authorities said.

When they reached the vehicle, the officers located a victim suffering from a gunshot wound, police said. The victim was reported deceased at the scene.

The incident is being investigated as a homicide. No other information about the investigation was immediately available.

The incident closed northbound lanes of Interstate Highway 880 at Marina Boulevard from 2 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. The highway has since been reopened.
