A man suspected of killing his mother in Fremont was arrested Sunday morning in Kensington, a community in unincorporated Contra Costa County, police said.
Kensington police received a call at about 5:50 a.m. of a suspicious person with a duffel bag on the porch of home on Lake Drive, according to police.
Officers found the man walking along the road and detained him, police said, adding that the man was identified as Omar Malik Pettigen, 31.
Authorities conducted a welfare check at about 11 a.m. Tuesday at an apartment on the 3900 block of Monroe Avenue and found a woman in her 60s dead, police said.
The level of violence used in the killing was severe, according to investigators.
Officers booked Pettigen into the Fremont jail Sunday evening, police said. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Alameda County Superior Court in Fremont at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
