Banchero's Italian Dinners Closes Its Doors

A popular Italian restaurant in Hayward officially closed its doors for good earlier this week.

Banchero's Italian Dinners, a popular restaurant in Hayward since 1948, closed its doors this week.

Owner John Banchero and his son, Joseph, informed their 35 employees of the closure Tuesday, according to the San Jose Mercury News. The restaurant's last day of operation was Sunday.

In an interview with the paper, Banchero said the decision to close was a difficult one and added that, "We enjoyed our time. We had a great run. But we felt it was time to close. Everything has its time."

The restaurant was well-known for its family-style menu options and large portions. It was a popular spot for generations to gather and employees and locals are saddened by its closing.

Banchero said the reason for the closing had to do with the recession and wanting to spend more time with his family.

"I've worked my whole life. I've missed a lot of graduations, weddings and family events over the years. It's time to smell the roses, and there's only one way to do it," he told the paper.

The restuarant's website, which remained up and running Wednesday afternoon, noted that when the restaurant opened decades ago, dinners were intially priced at $1.25 with an additional $0.35 for steak.
