Preliminary 7.1 Magnitude Quake Rattles Southern California

A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck 9 miles west-southwest of Searles Valley in Southern California Friday night, according to the USGS.

The quake hit at 8:16 p.m. and rattled for up to 40 seconds, officials said.

This is part of more than 1,400 replicas since Thursday's 6.4 quake in the city of Ridgecrest.

Some Bay Area residents said they felt the 7.1 Southern California earthquake Friday night including some that were at SFO. Jean Elle reports.
