A protest brewed in San Ramon Saturday over a proposed cemetery, as hundreds of opponents turned out to make their voices heard
A developer plans to build the Creekside Memorial Park on about 220 acres of open space in San Ramon, but organizers of Saturday's event took people to see the site.
They said a cemetery there would increase traffic, is too close to existing homes, and would lead to declining property values--but their number one concern is water.
"They're gonna pull millions of gallons of water out of the ground, twice as much water as is actually under there," San Ramon Vice Mayor Phil O'Loane said. "We're being asked to cut back substantially on our own water usage. Why would we be pumping groundwater out anytime, but especially during a drought?"
Supporters of the project said East Bay families can bury their loved ones nearby, since the number of local plots are dwindling.
