Reckless Driver Kills Woman in Minivan in American Canyon

At least one person died Saturday night on State Highway 29 in American Canyon, according to the California Highway Patrol officials.

The American Canyon police received the first report at 11:30 p.m. of disturbance and reckless driving at 100 West American Canyon Road.

A person was reportedly driving a silver pick-up truck recklessly in a parking lot. The driver hit a parked car, then drove away to State Highway 29 by driving over the landscape and the curb, police said. When an officer tried to pull him over, the driver accelerated northbound, failing to yield.

The truck collided with a minivan that was turning into a shopping center at Eucalyptus Drive, killing the driver of the minivan, officials said. The identity of the driver has not been released yet. The driver of the truck sustained major injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital, police said.

Authorities closed the northbound lanes of the highway at Eucalyptus Drive at around 11:40 p.m., as they investigated the fatality. Alcohol is believed to be a factor, CHP officials said.

The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office is also investigating the incident, CHP officials said.

A Sig-alert was issued for the highway's northbound lanes at 12:15 a.m. Authorities said they did not know when the highway would reopen.
