Redwood City: Officers Identified in Fatal Police Shooting Outside Bank

Police released the names Friday of eight law enforcement officers who shot a person with a gun outside a bank in Redwood City last month.

Redwood City police Sgt. Nick Perna, Sgt. Ed Conover, Officer Junsun Lee, Officer Richard Santiago, Officer Mark Alifano, Officer Dave Denning, Officer Ryan Kimber and San Mateo County sheriff's Deputy Daniel Chiu shot 31-year-old Marco Antonio Carlos on Saturday, Dec. 30 outside a Wells Fargo bank in the 1900 block of Broadway.

Police said all the officers and the deputy have been placed on administrative leave.

The shooting happened after police received a report of person with a black handgun was pacing back in front of an ATM machine at about 2:30 p.m.

Police said they arrived and saw Carlos outside the bank. Officers set up perimeters to keep Carlos from escaping and keep bystanders safe.

Police said they started talking to Carlos to try to establish rapport and de-escalate the situation and have him surrender peacefully.

But Carlos continued to pace back and forth with his finger on the trigger of the gun. Police asked Carlos to drop the gun but he didn't. Officers started deploying less-lethal weapons but before they could use them Carlos fired shots in their direction.

The seven officers and one deputy opened fire and Carlos died at the scene.
