An armed man who allegedly threatened his girlfriend and brandished a firearm at a truck driver was arrested in Mountain View this afternoon after a search that prompted a nearby elementary school to shelter in place, police said.
Orlando Rivera, 27, of Mountain View, was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping, making criminal threats, and brandishing a weapon, according to police.
Officers responded to reports of a domestic disturbance in the 600 block of Mariposa Avenue just north of El Camino Real shortly before 12:15 p.m., police said. Arriving officers found the female victim, who identified her boyfriend as Rivera, according to police. She told officers that he went to her job in Los Altos and forced her at gunpoint to drive back to Mountain View, police said.
A tow truck driver approached them once they reached Mountain View and Rivera allegedly brandished a firearm at him, according to police.The 27-year-old demanded his cellphone and ran away, police said.
Officers set up a perimeter in the area and looked for the suspect, according to police.
Mariano Castro Elementary School and Gabriela Mistral Elementary School, which both serve children in kindergarten through fifth grade at 505 Escuela Ave., were ordered to shelter-in-place, police said.
The suspect is not connected with the schools, according to police.

A resident caught the attention of officers to report a suspicious person hiding at her apartment complex in the 600 block of Mariposa Avenue, according to police. Officers surrounded the complex and arrested Rivera without incident, police said.
The shelter-in-place orders were lifted soon after the arrest, according to police.
