Spark Ignites Gas Tanker Explosion in Richmond

Richmond fire officials are trying to determine exactly what caused a huge explosion that could have been much worse.

It happened just before noon on Goodrick Avenue. A gas tanker was being cleaned out in the yard of an industrial container facility when officials believe a spark jumped from another truck parked next to the gas tanker. That ignited the blast.

The driver says he got nervous when he started hearing a hissing sound, and that may have saved his life.

“I said, ‘Hey, fire,’ because it started growing,” said Dale Quam, who works for Henner Tanklines. “That’s when everyone turned into rabbits and started running like crazy.”

The driver and others ran out just before the blast.

The Richmond Police Department is now determining whether anyone should be cited in the incident.
