The Marin County Board of Supervisors approved on Tuesday to rename the road where a hiker and tanta teacher had been brutally killed from Gunshot Fire Road to Sunrise Fire Road.
Many, including the man's widow, felt it was inappropriate to have the word "gunshot" in a road where Steve Carter, 67, was killed while hiking on a trail in the Loma Alta Open Space Preserve, near Fairfax, in October 2015.
Three drifters are awaiting trial on murder charges.
During the campaign to dump the gunshot reference, some suggested the road be named for Carter or his dog Coco, who was wounded in the shooting, the Marin Indepedent Journal reported. Other suggestions included Love Life Fire Road, Vista Fire Road, Circle V Fire Road and Peace Rises Fire Road.
County parks staffers chose Sunrise Fire Road, which they said makes people think of the stunning view, and salutes Carter’s life.
