Rupert Murdoch Firm Pays Jude Law $200,000 Compensation for Phone Hacking

Murdoch's News Group Newspapers agreed to pay the actor to settle claims.

Rupert Murdoch's News Group Newspapers, which owns the Britsh tabloid The Sun, has agreed to pay actor Jude Law 130,000 pounds (roughly $200,000) after admitting it had hacked Law's phone and subjected him to "repeated and sustained physical surveillance."

The settlement included the admission that The Sun published 16 articles about the "Sherlock Holmes" star between 2003 and 2006 using information obtained through phone hacks.

NGN also reached settlement agreements with footballer Ashley Cole and former British Prime Minister John Prescott. They join others who have recently received payment from News of the World, another NGN title, including actress Sienna Miller, model Abi Titmuss and Sara Payne, the mother of a young girl who was murdered by a convicted pedophile.

"News Group has agreed to compensation being assessed on the basis that senior employees and directors of NGN knew about the wrongdoing and sought to conceal it by deliberately deceiving investigators and destroying evidence," the firm said in an official statement.

NGN is facing 60 lawsuits, and police estimate there could be as many as 6,000 people victimized by the tabloid's policies.
