Sacramento-Area Gang Member Stabs Former Mother-in-Law for Refusing to Disclose Location of Ex-Wife

A Sacramento man is wanted in connection with the Tuesday stabbing and attempted murder of his former mother-in-law in Gilroy.

Police said Justin Skannal, 36, stabbed the victim several times when she wouldn't disclose the location of Skannal's estranged wife.

Officers responded at 6:59 a.m. Tuesday to the 800 block of Montecelli Drive in response to a stabbing and located a 59-year-old woman suffering from multiple life-threatening stab wounds to her upper torso.

Emergency crews were able to stabilize the victim and transport her to the hospital.

Investigators were able to identify Skannal, who is the former son-in-law of the victim, as the suspect, police said.

Police said Skannal forced his way into the residence and into the victim's bedroom and demanded to know the whereabouts of his estranged wife. When the victim did not tell him, he stabbed her multiple times as she was lying in her bed, police said.

The victim was able to push Skannal off her, and he fled the residence. Skannal is a Sacramento area "Crip" criminal street gang member and has an extensive criminal history including a prior conviction for making criminal threats toward his estranged wife, police said.

He has active warrants for a recent parole violation and a domestic violence incident, and there is an out-of-county served criminal protection order prohibiting him from contacting his estranged wife.

There has been a $1,000,000 warrant issued for his arrest in connection with the stabbing incident.

Police do not know his current whereabouts but said he has ties to Sacramento, Modesto and the East Bay.

He should be considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is urged to contact Gilroy police at (408) 846-0349.
