Samples Test Positive for Fecal Matter at Monterey Municipal Beach

Public health officials Tuesday posted a fecal matter advisory for Monterey Municipal Beach, San Carlos Beach and Carmel Beach at Ocean Avenue after water samples tested positive for indicator bacteria on Monday.

High levels of indicator bacteria point to the presence of feces, which can come from storm drain runoff, animal or human activity.

Visitors are asked to avoid recreational water activities as fecal matter can cause illness.

Officials posted an advisory on Oct. 3 warning residents to avoid all county beaches up to three days after the expected rainfall over the weekend.

Public health officials will remove the indicator bacteria advisories at the beaches once it is safe for visitors.
