San Bruno Sues CPUC for Gas Pipeline Explosion Documents

San Bruno is escalating its tense relationship with the California Public Utilities Commission by hitting it with a lawsuit, demanding public records related to the 2010 deadly gas-line inferno.

San Bruno is demanding a judge give it access to PUC public records, first requested nearly a year ago.

City leaders claim the paperwork could reveal what they call improper conduct and evidence of cozy relationships between PG&E and its regulator.

But, San Bruno City Attorney Marc Zafferano has one more question: “Has the PUC not only reformed, but have they implemented the safety procedures that have been required so that this disaster or this type of disaster will never happen again?”

After first recommending PG&E pay no fines for the blast, the PUC recommended fines of $300 million for the 2010 blast, which killed eight people and destroyed 38 homes.

The commission said in a statement it is reviewing the lawsuit. It said it has already replied to several extensive records requests from the city, and will continue to evaluate and complete its responses.
