San Francisco 1978: Feinstein Leads a City in Shock

Nine days after Bay Area based preacher Jim Jones murdered 900 of his followers by forcing them to drink cyanide laced fruit punch, San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk were assassinated in City Hall. Dianne Feinstein was suddenly thrust into the center of a nightmare, the interim mayor of a city gripped with fear, agony, and anger.

“I hear a door slam. I hear the shots. I smell the cordite. So I open the office door of Harvey and see him on his stomach,” Sen. Dianne Feinstein said. “It was a very hard time. One that’s very painful to remember because it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through.”

Watch the video above to hear more from Sen. Feinstein on the tragic events of that day in 1978.
