San Francisco: Mother of Teen Murdered in 2006 Searching for New Leads

A San Francisco mother is taking her grief public, hoping her pain will persuade witnesses to tell police who killed her son seven years ago.

On the anniversary of Aubrey Abrakasa's murder, a tearful Paulette Brown stood on the corner Wednesday night where the 17-year-old was gunned down at Grove and Baker streets just after 3 p.m.

Aubrey played high school basketball and was about to start his senior year at Raoul Wallenberg Traditional High School when he was killed.

“I miss my boy,” Brown said. “I wouldn't wish this for any mother to go through something like this."
Brown said her son was not the intended target. She says Aubrey was heading to work at the Bernal Height Community Center when he saw a gunman approaching neighborhood friends and he warned them to leave.

She said he saved people who know who killed him.

"My son saw it and hollered run and everybody ran,” she said. “They came to the funeral and said Aubrey died saving our lives."

Brown told the San Francisco Police Commission she knows who did it.
Police Chief Greg Suhr says it's a frustrating case.

“We believe, as does Ms. Brown, we know who is responsible for her son’s homicide,” Suhr said. “We need evidence and testimony necessary to make the case."

Police Commissioner Joe Marshall said silence is a killer.

"We just had a 1-year-old baby boy killed in Oakland and an 8-year-old goes to the door and gets shot and those people are being protected by the community,” he said, referring to two cases this summer where children were killed in Oakland and no suspects have been arrested. “That's the only reason these people are running around because code of not telling.”

It's a code Brown is determined to break.

"I will continue to be here,” she said. “You can't be afraid."

Anyone with information about Abrakasa's death is asked to call the homicide detail at 415-553-1145. People wishing to remain anonymous can call the tip line at 415-575-4444 or send a tip by text message to TIP411 with "SFPD" in the message.
