San Francisco Names its Newest Star

Baby gorilla finally gets a name

A baby gorilla abandoned by its mother finally has a name thanks to dad.

Zookeepers on Wednesday set up five different melons in the father gorilla's enclosure, each one representing a different name.

The father chose the melon for "Hasani," which means "handsome" in Swahili.

Three-month-old Hasani has been under human care since the infant primate's birth mother left their nest and refused to return to nurse.

The zoo chose the five finalists for the male western lowland gorilla's name from 5,300 entries. The father's name is "Oscar Jonesy."

The winning name was suggested by Amanda Verploeg of Oskaloosa, Iowa.
