Bottled Water Ban Next in San Francisco?

City that knows how to say no may kibosh plastic bottles of water.

Look closely in your lunch box or gym bag -- you may soon have some contraband when you visit San Francisco.

It's your bottled water.

Sales of bottles of drinking water may soon be barred from events like Outside Lands, as San Francisco mulls a total ban on plastic bottled water sales on city property, according to the San Francisco Examiner.

On this ban, San Francisco would be a follower: other cities, like Concord, Massachusetts, have banned bottled water as part of the "Ban The Bottle" campaign, the newspaper reported.

Under a proposal floated by San Francisco Board of Supervisors President David Chiu, bans would begin on bottles 21 ounces or smaller, and would encourage city residents and visitors to partake of the city's tap water -- which is piped in from Hetch Hetchy Reservoir in Yosemite National Park.

It would be phased in -- if approved, it would apply to new leases signed after 2014 (which means bottled everything would be available at the San Francisco Giants' AT&T Park). And Outside Lands would not be beyond the pale for bottled water until 2016.
