Domestic violence allegations have surfaced against San Francisco's Sheriff-elect Ross Mirkarimi just days before his swearing in, but his wife has publicly rejected any suggestion of abuse.
A neighbor contacted police Wednesday to report that Mirkarimi's wife, Eliana Lopez, had shown her a bruise on her arm sustained during an argument that occurred on New Year's Eve, according to a search warrant affidavit.
Police seized a video camera and iPhone used to exchange text messages about the injury, but would not comment today on the investigation.
"We cannot confirm any active or open investigation involving the Sheriff-elect at this juncture," police spokesman Sgt. Daryl Fong said.
Lopez issued a statement denying the allegations through political consultant Jim Stearns.
"What is happening here is wrong," she said. "I have absolutely no complaint against my husband. My husband has never been abusive to me. Ross and I are committed to our marriage, our son and our family."
Mirkarimi, who served on the Board of Supervisors for seven years before being elected last month as San Francisco's new sheriff, will be sworn in Sunday to replace Michael Hennessey, who is retiring after 32 years in the post.
