A former high school teacher from San Francisco has been arrested on suspicion of agreeing to meet a 17-year-old boy for sex.
An undercover Mountain View police detective posed as the teen on an online social site.
Police arrested 52-year-old Harlan Edelman Tuesday night as he arrived at Cuesta Park in Mountain View to meet with someone he thought was a teenage boy. Officials said Edelman agreed to meet for sex after reaching out to the supposed teenager online.
Police say the detective and Edelman exchanged messages online before agreeing to meet.
"He was reaching out for sex," Mountain View Police Sgt. Saul Jaeger said. "The initial contacts were explicit material, sexually explicit material and he ended up agreeing to meeting for sex."
Before resigning in September, Edelman was a teacher at San Francisco's Academy of Arts and Sciences, in the city's Diamond Heights neighborhood.
"There is nothing to indicate that this arrest is related in any way to his work at SFUSD," district spokeswoman Gentle Blythe said in a statement. "There is nothing in Mr. Edelman's employment record indicating that there would be cause for concern."
The San Francisco Unified School District spokeswoman said, as a district employee, Edelman underwent full FBI and Department of Justice background checks and came up clear.
Edelman's name did not appear in NBC Bay Area's search of the Megan's Law database.

Edelman’s bail was set at $80,000. His first court date is set for Friday, Feb. 8.
