The San Francisco Turkey Trot will kick off as always on Thanksgiving morning. But its 2,000 trotters might need to bring their own snacks and garb.
Race director Steve Woo told race participants that "it is with shock and disbelief" that the 15-foot U-Haul truck loaded with $20,000 worth of race refreshments, T-shirts – 2,000 of them – signs, tables and more was stolen sometime between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. Wednesday morning.
"At this point, we are looking at a very bare bones event," Woo saidin an email.
Woo said 2,000 race bibs were not stolen, nor was the head of the race’s turkey mascot.
The race director told NBC Bay Area he parked the U-Haul at the same location on 26th Avenue in the Richmond District for 13 years and never had a problem.
The annual trot kicks off about 8 a.m. in San Francisco. Registration is closed.
Woo said a police report has been filed. He also asked anyone who sees any U-Hauls with the Arizona license plate (#AD48789), to report it to San Francisco police at (415) 553-0123. The police case number is 15102473.
