The San Jose City Council on Tuesday is expected to approve a one-year pilot program to allow the police department to use a drone.
The $7,000 drone has been at the center of debate and the focus of a series of community meetings over privacy concerns. But Mayor Sam Liccardo said the drone, which the police department acquired in 2014, will only be used in certain situations.
"We're really constraining the use of drones to very specific circumstances where you have an explosive device or you have an active shooting," Liccardo said. [[321395331, C]]
Under the proposal, the police drone cannot fly at night or record video.
If the council approves the use of a drone, the program still must be approved the Federal Aviation Administration.
If approved by the FAA, the pilot program will likely start in 2017.
