Officials in Santa Clara County have confirmed that mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile virus, the earliest detection in the county's history.
The virus was detected in mosquitoes collected on May 16 from the 95008, 95117, 95126 and 95128 ZIP codes.
That detection led the Santa Clara County Vector Control District to schedule a fogging for May 22 at 11 p.m. for the area where Interstate 680 and Highway 17 intersect, near Valley Medical.
The district says information packets will be distributed in the fogging area beginning on Tuesday, notifying residents about the fogging operation.
West Nile can cause mild to severe flu-like symptoms, such as fever, headache, body aches, and, in severe cases, significant neurological damage or even death.
Dr. Noor Tietze of the Santa Clara County Vector Control District says “this underscores the need for residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites, and to eliminate standing water on their properties.”
