San Jose Police Putting More Officers on Patrol

More patrol officers will be out on the streets this weekend after the San Jose Police Department has reshuffled its staff.

The goal is to have enough staff answer 911 calls, San Jose police said. Four units including the Gang Suppression Unit and Homicide Unit will lose officers.

Those officers will go out on patrol and respond to emergency calls.

"What's really important is that we have enough numbers in patrol," Sgt. Heather Randol said. "Because our primary obligation to the community is to answer those 911 calls for service."

The officers answering those calls will stay on patrol indefinitely, and there are no plans at this time to backfill their positions.
