Man Dies After Allegedly Assaulting San Mateo County Sheriff's Deputy in Millbrae

A person contacted by a San Mateo County sheriff's deputy has died after a struggle with deputies Wednesday afternoon in Millbrae, sheriff's officials said.

At about 1 p.m., a deputy contacted a man who had been running in and out of traffic in the 1300 block of El Camino Real, according to the sheriff's office.

The man allegedly assaulted the deputy, who called for help. Other deputies arrived and a struggle continued until deputies arrested the man.

"The deputy exited his vehicle to contact the suspect and the suspect immediately assaulted the deputy," the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. "The deputy radioed for assistance."

Sheriff's officials said the deputy who initiated contact with the man was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries. The man was also taken to a hospital where he died.

Sheriff's officials said the struggle did not involved gunfire.

"He kind of was coming towards the officers a couple of them and that’s when somebody tased him and he fell," said witness Dennis Barboza.

El Camino Real between Millwood Drive and Santa Helena Avenue was closed as law enforcement investigated but was later reopened.

Anyone who may have witnessed the events is asked to call the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office at 650-363-4636.
