Commission: San Mateo Judge Asked for Coffee, Tossed Paper at Female Attorney, Staffer

A Bay Area judge accused of asking a female attorney bring him a cup of coffee and tossing a calendar at a female court clerk has been disciplined.

The Commission on Judicial Performance said Monday it has publicly admonished San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Joseph Bergeron for treating women inappropriately. The commission says Bergeron asked the courtroom clerk if she played baseball and then twice threw a crumpled calendar at her, hitting her in the chest.

He was also accused of requesting a cup of coffee from a female deputy district attorney. Bergeron allegedly told the woman he'd give her a tip if he had cash.

The commission said Bergeron had previously been warned by the court about his behavior.

A call to his attorney was not immediately returned.
