Santa Clara County Animal Shelters Offer Free Pet Adoptions

Dozens of dogs and cats are now checking out their new Bay Area homes thanks to a Bay Area-wide adoption program.

About 146 dogs and cats were adopted at a San Martin shelter Saturday and the adoption fees were waived. It's all part of Maddie's Fund. And it's not over yet. You can still adopt a dog or cat for free Sunday.

Maddie's Fund was founded by Workday co-founder Dave Duffield and his wife. The program is named after their pet miniature schnauzer Maddie.

"In addition to that, Maddie's Fund generously sponsors each adoption, so they pay us for each adoption that we do, and that money is very important to us. It's actually a huge funding source for us, for medical care, for life-saving medical care that we provide for homeless pets throughout the year," San Martin animal shelter spokeswoman Lisa Jenkins said.

Shelter operators said because it is kitten season right now, adopting out all of these dogs and cats will help them provide enough space for all the kittens coming in. At a shelter in San Jose, you can also adopt other animals such as guinea pigs and rabbits without paying an adoption fee.
