Santa Rosa is considering offering portable bathrooms and showers for the homeless to use.
According to The Press Democrat, the Santa Rosa City Council will discuss the topic at a meeting on Tuesday.
“Bathrooms and showers are one of the most requested things by people who are experiencing homelessness,” Jennielynn Holmes-Davis, director of shelter and housing at Catholic Charities, told the publication.
Among the issues under consideration will be whether to rent a trailer with a bathroom and shower at a cost of $74,000 per year, or 10 portable toilets with handwashing stations, which would cost $22,000 per year.
In San Francisco, a nonprofit called Lava Mae operates a bus that provides showers and other basic hygiene services for the homeless in the Tenderloin and Mission, with a second bus coming soon to the Upper Haight. The vehicles are old diesel buses from MUNI that were donated.
