Cainan Schierholtz, the brother of San Francisco Giants right fielder Nate Schierholtz, was arraigned Thursday in connection with a series of hit-and-run drunken driving crashes in Danville on Sunday, but did not enter a plea.
Schierholtz, 23, has been charged with one count of felony drunken driving causing injury, three counts of felony hit-and-run causing injury and one count of misdemeanor hit-and-run, Deputy District Attorney Dominique Yancey said.
"Cainan feels terrible about what happened," Schierholtz's attorney Derek Ewin said outside the courtroom. "He, like all of us, is very thankful that nobody was injured any worse than they were."
Ewin, who is a former Contra Costa County prosecutor, said Schierholtz's brother has nothing to do with the case.
The alleged rampage began at about 10 a.m. Sunday when he struck a bicyclist, a pedestrian, a pickup a light pole and an SUV.
According to witnesses, the pickup driver blocked Schierholtz in a dead end street and waited for him to come back. By the time he returned, several other people had arrived.
The group pulled him out of his vehicle and held him until police arrived. They said he was so drunk at the time he could barely speak.
Schierholtz remained in custody today. His bail has been set at $200,000.
He is scheduled to return to court Aug. 19 to enter a plea.
