Schools Closed Due to Massive Wildfires, Evacuations and Air Quality

5 P.M. UPDATE: West Contra Costa, Antioch, Mt. Diablo, Martinez, John Swett, Benicia, and Pittsburg unified school districts will remain closed on Friday. Check back as the list continues to grow. 


Raging wildfires in Sonoma and Napa counties have forced numerous school closures.

School District Closures

The following school closures were reported Wednesday. In a few cases, school districts opted to close for the week.

Sonoma County

  • Bennett Valley
  • Cinnabar School District
  • Cloverdale
  • Cotati-Rohnert Park
  • Dunham
  • Forestville
  • Geyserville
  • Gravenstein USD - Closed all week
  • Guerneville
  • Harmony/Salmon Creek
  • Healdsburg
  • Horicon
  • Kenwood - Closed through Thursday
  • Liberty ESD
  • Mark West
  • Monte Rio
  • Oak Grove Union
  • Old Adobe Union
  • Petaluma City Schools
  • Piner Olivet
  • Rincon Valley - Closed all week
  • Roseland - Closed all week
  • Santa Rosa City Schools
  • Sebastopol Union
  • Sonoma State University
  • The Reach School
  • Twin Hills Union
  • Two Rock Union
  • Waugh - Closed Thursday and Friday as well

Napa County

  • All Napa Valley USD schools will remain closed for the rest of the week

Solano County

  • All schools in the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District
  • Solano Community College
  • All schools in the Vallejo City USD
  • Benicia Unified School District

Contra Costa County 

  • West Contra Costa Unified School District 
  • Antioch Unified School District
  • Mt. Diablo Unified School District
  • Martinez Unified School District
  • John Swett Unified School District 
  • Pittsburg Unified School District
  • Diablo Valley College - Pleasant Hill and San Ramon campuses.

School Districts Impacted By Wildfire Smoke

Other school districts farther away from the fire zones are not closed, but many are impacted by the smoke. The poor air quality has prompted some districts to alter outdoor activity plans as well as cancel outdoor practices and games in some cases.

Santa Clara County

  • Cupertino Union School District
  • Fremont Unified High School District
  • San Jose Unified School District

Alameda County

  • All Alameda County school districts are OPEN and are using inclement weather procedures to restrict outdoor activity for students
