Science Camp Employee Arrested for Child Porn Accused of Sexually Abusing Boy: District Attorney

A Santa Clara County science camp employee is accused of sexually abusing a 10-year-old boy, according to David Shabaglian, Santa Clara County deputy district attorney.

News of the alleged sexual abuse released Monday comes after the same Walden West science camp employee, identified by police as Edgar Covarrubias, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of having hundreds of images and videos of child pornography.

"This is a parent's worst nightmare," Shabaglian said.

Shabaglian said the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation after Covarrubias e-mailed child porn to an undercover official looking for violators.

"This activity takes place and it goes undetected for years," Shabaglian said. "So victims come forward years after, but in this case there was child pornography that was found."

Authorities allegedly found Covarrubias, 27, with hundreds of child pornography images and videos on his personal computer and phone.

The county's Office of Education operates Walden West, week-long summer camps for science education, at two sites in Saratoga and Cupertino. Covarrubias worked at the Cupertino site but lived at the Saratoga camp, Office of Education spokesman Ken Blackstone said.

Covarrubias was fired from his position as a substitute recreation assistant and evening facilities monitor after the camp learned of the allegations, Blackstone said last week.

Investigators said there could be more victims in the case.

Anyone with information about the case has been asked to call the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office at 408-808-4300.
