MOSS LANDING, Calif. (AP) — Scientists exploring the edge of the Monterey Canyon have found a shipwreck on the seafloor off Santa Cruz's coast.
The Santa Cruz Sentinels reports the vessel appeared first on sonar images from research on the San Gregorio Fault.
A research geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey was struck by some sharper angles captured in the images and after taking a closer look spotted the barge.
Video images of the vessel captured by an unpiloted submarine sent to the seafloor show the ship is the Umpqua II.
The Umpqua II was a barge from Reedsport, Oregon, that grounded outside Moss Landing in 1982. It sunk more than 1 mile beneath the surface of the ocean, 12 miles southwest of Santa Cruz.
