Search for Stolen Car Leads to Officer Involved Shooting in Santa Clara

An officer-involved shooting took place early Saturday morning after officials responded to a stolen car report in Santa Clara.

According to officials, at 1:40 a.m., Sunnyvale police were searching for a stolen vehicle when police officials spotted the car and attempted to pull it over by El Camino Real and Scott Blvd.

Police say the suspect pulled over, waited for the officers to the step out and Gomez allegedly put his car in reverse and rammed a police car. Gomez ignored the officer's commands to stop, and fearing for his life, the officer fired on the suspect, according to officials. 

The suspect, Omar Gomez, 24, of San Jose, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, driving a stolen vehicle, possessing stolen property and parole violation, according to police.

The suspect was transported to a hospital, underwent surgery and is in stable condition, officials say.

According to police, Gomez was driving a stolen vehicle, is on parole for felony burglary and doesn't have a driver license. 

No further details were immediately available.
