Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) announced on Sunday that she will introduce a bill to ban assault weapons.
"It will ban the sale, the transfer, the importation and the possession- not retroactively but prospectively. And it will ban the same for big clips, drums or strips of more than 10 bullets," Feinstein said of the bill she plans to introduce into the Senate. She added that the ban would exclude more than 900 specific weapons.
"The purpose of this bill is to get...weapons of war off the streets of our cities," Feinstein told NBC's Meet the Press.
Following the elementary school shooting in Newtown Conn. Friday, Feinstein issued a statement saying, "I hope and trust that in the next session of Congress there will be sustained and thoughtful debate about America's gun culture and out responsibility to prevent more loss of life." She added that gun violence had taken the lives of more than 8,000 Americans last year.
