SF Kids Dia de Los Muertos Celebration to Honor Steve Jobs

Third-graders from Alvarado Elementary School plan to celebrate the life of the late tech mogul.

Usually Dia de Los Muertos is celebrated in November. But Friday, students from Alvarado Elementary School will be holding a special ceremony for the soul of a recently departed Bay Area icon.

About 50 third graders enrolled in a Spanish immersion program will be performing a Day of the Dead memorial for the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

"The students and teachers were touched by the impact that that Mr. Jobs had on the world," said Tim Smith, whose daughter is part of the program. "Two of the teachers wrote and choreographed the performance, and students created decorative masks as part of the celebration of Steve's life during a Day of the Dead ceremony last November."

The students' masks are made of computer parts and layered with images of computers and Apple products.

The class will perform at the de Young museum Friday as part if its 2012 Young at Art festival, which showcases students art from San Francisco schools.

San Francisco 49ers' tight end Vernon Davis is also scheduled to speak at the festival.
