SF Mission Bay Fire Ruled Accidental

The massive fire that torched a high-rise apartment complex that was under construction in San Francisco’s Mission Bay neighborhood has been ruled accidental.

That structure, at 1200 4th Street, just south of AT&T Park, was to hold 172 apartments before the fire destroyed the building back on March 11.

The San Francisco Fire Department report says a "hot or smoldering object" on the exterior of the building ignited and then spread to the rest of the construction site.

All contractors and construction workers made it out safely.

The company that owns the building, BRE Properties, said its insurance policy would cover the costs of replacing the building and any lost revenue.

Other buildings near the fire scene, including the Strata at Mission Bay apartments and a building at the University of California at San Francisco Mission Bay campus, were damaged by flying embers, excessive heat and smoke.

The building was part of a development project by BRE known as MB360.
