A 77-year-old grandmother is clinging to life after police say she was brutally beaten in the head as she got off a Muni bus in Chinatown earlier this month.
"I would say near death is the best way of describing her condition," victim Lin Leong's granddaughter Connie Ho said. "She maybe has a day left."
Police are urging the public to help them find the woman they say attacked Leong on May 10, hitting her at least twice on the head, knocking her to the ground and leaving her with life-threatening injuries.
Police believe a good Samaritan helped Leong just after her attack, moving her away from the side of the Muni bus and sitting her down on the sidewalk. But the person didn't stay at the scene and hasn't yet been interviewed by police, they said.
Investigators are still trying to determine which bus Leong was exiting and at what time on May 10. The motive for the assault remains under investigation.
So far, investigators believe the incident occurred between 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. in the Chinatown area, possibly on Stockton Street.
Police have not said which bus the victim was traveling on but said she is a frequent rider of the 2-Clement, 3-Jackson, 30-Stockton and 45-Union/Stockton buses. She often travels between the Japantown and the Chinatown neighborhoods, police said.
