Hazardous Chemicals Emergency Prompts Shelter in Place in Pittsburg

A hazardous chemicals emergency prompted authorities to issue a shelter-in-place Tuesday afternoon in Pittsburg.

The incident was reported in the city's Parkside Manor neighborhood, between Andrew and Jimno avenues, and North Parkside Drive and 17th Street.

Randy Sawyer with the Contra Costa Health Services said railroad cars are involved in the incident. One of the railroad cars was carrying sodium sulfide. Sawyer said it is believed residual material in the car, owned by BNSF Railroad, was leaking and caused a very strong odor in the area.

The shelter-in-place order was lifted shortly after 3 p.m.

No other information was immediately available.
