CHP Investigating Shooting on Interstate 80 in Hercules Area

The shooting on I-80 in Contra Costa County is the latest in a series of freeway shootings on East Bay freeways.

California Highway Patrol investigators are working to locate a possible suspect in an East Bay freeway shooting that left a motorist hospitalized.

CHP officials said a man was shot in the leg and was transported by ambulance to a hospital. His condition was not immediately known late Tuesday.

The Tuesday night shooting on Interstate 80 in Contra Costa County is the latest in a series of shootings that have taken place on East Bay freeways.

CHP officers shut down a portion of Interstate 80 in the Hercules area during the shooting investigation.

At 9:16 p.m., the CHP responded to reports of a shooting in the eastbound lanes of I-80 near Highway 4. A Sig-alert was issued at 9:37 p.m. due to the police activity. Two eastbound lanes were shut down just west of Highway 4, and four lanes were closed at Pinole Valley Road.

A suspect vehicle is described as a black Chevrolet El Camino with tinted windows.

Several deadly shootings have taken place over the last few months along a stretch of Highway 4, which has prompted local authorities to install security cameras in the area.

On May 16, Highway 4 was the scene of another investigation after police said a shooting in Antioch spilled onto the freeway. The night before, on May 15, police said a man was shot along Highway 4.

CHP officials said four people have been killed in more than 20 shootings on East Bay freeways since November.

Investigators have said that most of the shootings appear to be gang related.
