Shoppers Run Down Sex Offender After Assault of Toddler

A grandmother, an aunt and a crowd of Dollar Tree shoppers ran down a registered sex offender they say assaulted a 2-year-old girl Wednesday in Union City.

According to the Union City Police Department, the child was returning a holiday ribbon in a separate  aisle when she was attacked, disrobed and straddled by Eugene Melendres Ramos.

After about 60 seconds, her grandmother and aunt interrupted the assault. Others joined the chase of Ramos through the shopping complex.

"A solicitor in front of the store gave chase and tackled the suspect," according to the press release. "Fortunately a BART police officer (Kory Frost, at right) was nearby and stopped" when he saw the group holding down the suspect.

"A lot of people are saying that I did a good job, and I appreciate that. But the heroes are the citizens, not me," Ross said.

Officer Ross has been with BART police for 28 years.

Ramos was arrested and charged with kidnapping, rape, sexual acts with a child and false imprisonment.
