Sinkhole Shuts Down Tahoe Highway

Road could be closed for several days

A section of a highway in Lake Tahoe remains closed as a result of a sinkhole.

A pipe under Highway 28 burst Saturday morning and washed out a section of the road.

Authorities said the pipeline is for treated wastewater and that it is mainly used for irrigation in Carson Valley.

Officials said they have to wait for approximately 40,000 to 50,000 gallons of water to pour out of the pipe before they can fix it.

They said they don't know what caused it to break, but they hope to reopen the road by midweek.
