Sister of Perpetual Indulgence Attacked During Pride Event in Alleged Hate Crime

San Francisco police are looking for a group of people suspected of attacking a member of an LGBT activist troupe and her husband during Pride weekend in San Francisco.

The victim, who was working with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence during the Pink Saturday event, was allegedly physically and verbally assualted at the intersection of Castro and 18th streets.

San Francisco police spokesperson Albie Esparza said that the couple had been walking down Castro Street when they were approached by three men and a woman who began hurling derogatory comments at them.

The suspects then punched and kicked the couple, injuring them, eventually fleeing from the scene. The couple received medical treatment at the scene.

The attack happened around 8:30 p.m. Saturday and the suspects have yet to be apprehended, Esparza said.

“We are investigating it as a hate crime because we believe the attack was solely based on the victim’s sexual orientation,” he said.

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence describe themselves as a group of "queer nuns". The order hosts the annual Pink Saturday event in San Francisco during Pride weekend dressed in colorful habits and makeup.

The Sisters posted about the incident on their Facebook page, sharing photos of the sister who was attacked, hoping her distinguishing attire might jog somebody’s memory.

The group is urging anyone with information on the attack to contact San Francisco police.

Esparza asked anyone with information about the attack to contact SFPD at (415) 575-4444.

San Francisco police are also investigating another alleged hate crime on an East Bay couple during Sunday's Gay Pride Parade.

The couple were walking to a BART station in the Mission District when a group of men reportedly hurled homophobic slurs at them and then beat them up.
