SJ DUI Victim Identified

The Santa Clara County medical examiner's office has identified a  20-year-old man who died in a crash involving an alleged drunken driver in  San Jose early Sunday morning as Mauro Avalos Garcia.

The crash happened at about 2:05 a.m. on Interstate Highway 280  just north of Winchester Boulevard.

A preliminary investigation indicates that Garcia, a San Jose  resident, was driving south on Highway 280 when his 1999 Chevy Cavalier left  the roadway and collided with a concrete wall on the right shoulder,  according to the CHP.

Garcia exited the vehicle and had walked to the front of the car  when a black 2006 Honda Civic collided with the rear of the Cavalier, causing  the back end of the car to swing around and strike Garcia, according to the  CHP.

Soon afterward, a green Acura 2.2CL hit the rear of the Honda, and  a white Toyota Scion struck Garcia, who was lying in the roadway.

Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the black Civic, 21-year-old Diana Yi of San Jose,  was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to the  CHP.

The crash prompted the closure of three lanes for about three  hours.
