SJPD Arrest Suspect After Blind 18-Year-Old Killed

San Jose police on Thursday announced that homicide detectives arrested "a suspect" in connection with the fatal shooting of a legally blind 18-year-old who was gunned down at Capitol Park.

But Sgt. Heather Randol would not say much more than that, including the name or age of the suspect, saying the agency was waiting until the case was reviewed by the District Attorney.

The arrest was made Wednesday about 8:30 p.m. following the 4 p.m. shooting of  Pedro Cortez - a legally blind student at James Lick High School - on Nov. 23 in the 800 block of Peter Pan Avenue near Capitol Park.

Cortez was the 44th person to be killed in the city of San Jose this year.

Cortez's family told NBC Bay Area that a car came up to Cortez and a group of people and shot him in the chest. The teens relatives also said Pedro was not a gangmember.

They described him as a hardworking teen who helped his stepfather at a moving company and who has been legally blind since he was 13.

"He leaves us with his pain to live with every day,"  Lizette Dado, Cortez's aunt, said Monday night at a vigil for her nephew. "It's so hard. I don't want to put this pain upon anyone. It's so dang hard."
