The snow just keeps on falling in Tahoe, and while ski resorts are now talking about extending the season unitl May, emergency officials issued a gas warning for local residents.
They say the snow may be high enough to block ventilation systems and that could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.
Resorts in the higher elevations got another eight feet this week with a couple more feet in the forecast by the weekend.
For Bay Area skiers, the snow is close to "too much of a good thing" when they take into account getting there. Highway 80 has closed several times this week and chains were mandatory on both 80 and Highway 50.
Northstar-at-Tahoe says 2010-2011 is the biggest winter in 25 years with more than 500 inches of snow.
Squaw Valley says it is already in record territory with 600 inches so far this season. This is only the third time in the last 40 years that Squaw has seen this much snow.
Lots of resorts are already talking about extending the season.
- Northstar: Sunday, April 24.
- Mt Rose: Sunday, April 24
- Squaw Valley: Sunday, May 8
- Alpine Meadows Ski Resort: May 8
- Donner Ski Ranch says they will be open "until the snow is gone." Last year the resort closed the first day of summer.
- All other ski resorts are TBD, according to the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association.
Wind gusts of over 60 mph were recorded on top of Alpine Meadows Thursday and white-out conditions remain a concern for drivers over Donner summit. "Seeing that the snow is already falling at a 45-degree angle, we could see potential problems," California Highway patrol officer Todd Kettwig told KCRA.
