Skype Updates IPO Plan, Plans for Advertising

Sometimes breaking up is the right thing to do.

Just ask Skype, who were ditched by its funding partner eBay last year. Now the Swedish company, with extensive new digs in Palo Alto, is showing signs of positive growth.

All Things D reports that on Monday Skype filed an amendment to its S1 filing for going public and within the filing comes a list of interesting new numbers.

The VoIP service says it has grown its subscriber list from about 550 million to 663 million. Of those, 145 million use Skype at least once a month.

Perhaps more importantly for Skype, the company reports that it has jumped to 8.8 million paid subscribers since last August when it had 8.1 million.

All of this has helped Skype's revenues grow to $860 million last year, with an operating profit around $21 million. In 2009 Skype's revenues were $719 million with an operating loss.

The company is also planning to increase its revenue by adding advertising in upcoming releases on both Mac and PC.
