Slain Bicyclists Remembered

Weekend Tribute Planned

Cyclists from across the Bay Area will gather this weekend in Cupertino to remember two cyclists killed last March.

Kristen Gough and Matt Peterson died while on a training ride after they were struck by a Santa Clara County sheriff's deputy's patrol car on Steven's Canyon Road.

Saturday's memorial begins at 7:45 at the Cupertino Civic Center. Participants will cycle to the entrance of Stevens Creek Park, near the site of the crash, where two memorial plaques will be unveiled.

Deputy James Council is charged with the deaths of Gough and Peterson. The California Highway Patrol says his car crossed the double yellow line.

A third cyclist was also hurt, but Council was not charged in connection with that injury.

He faces two years in jail if convicted of two counts of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter.

A pretrial for Council is scheduled for November 14th.
