Small Plane Crashes Into Fence at Reid-Hillview Airport in San Jose

No injuries were reported.

A student pilot and flight instructor walked away without injuries after a plane crash near Reid-Hillview Airport that ended up blocking part of a major thoroughfare in San Jose Wednesday morning, a fire department spokesman said.

San Jose firefighters got a call at 10:38 a.m. about the incident and arrived four minutes later to find the plane had overran the runway, crashed through the fence and came to a stop on Tully Road, fire spokesman Capt. Christopher Salcido said.

Salcido said two men in the plane, the pilot and passenger, were not injured. He said it was also fortunate that no vehicles were struck by the plane on Tully Road, a busy street in the city.

It wasn't clear if the student or the instructor was steering the plane, Salcido said.

Whoever was piloting the plane was traveling south and doing touch-and-go landings, where the aircraft touches the ground then quickly takes off again, Salcido said.

The plane blocked two westbound lanes of Tully Road between Capitol Expressway and Eastridge Way until about 12:30 p.m., according to Salcido.

The Cessna 172 single-engine plane crashed into the fence after landing at Runway 13R and sustained minor damage, according to FAA spokesman Ian Gregor.

The FAA is conducting an investigation into the crash, Gregor said.
