Someone Shoots Ice Cream Truck Vendor

Three people were arrested after an ice cream vendor was shot in  Oakland Sunday afternoon, a police spokesman said.

The shooting occurred shortly after noon on Sunday in the 1500  block of Foothill Boulevard, Oakland police Officer Jeff Thomason said.

The victim, a 49-year-old man, was approached by another man, a  teenage boy and a teenage girl. The trio initially asked the victim for ice  cream, but then demanded money from him and the man took out a gun, according  to Thomason.

The victim tried to defend himself and was shot during a struggle.  He was taken to a hospital with a gunshot wound near his spine and was in  critical condition earlier this week, Thomason said.

As of today, his condition had improved to stable.

After the shooting, the three suspects fled on foot to a nearby  park. Witnesses helped police identify the trio and they were taken into  custody a short time later, Thomason said.

All three were questioned by investigators and admitted to their  involvement in the shooting, he said.

Otis Crawford, 21, was arrested and booked into county jail on  suspicion of robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. The teenage boy and  girl, both 17, were booked into juvenile hall on similar charges, Thomason  said.
