South Bay Fogging for West Nile Virus

For the second time in less than a week, vector control crews in the South Bay on Thursday will be out in force in north San Jose "fogging" for mosquitoes.

The fogging is scheduled to start at 11 p.m., weather permitting, and will take several hours. The vector control district says the virus is very active in Santa Clara County this year. Officials are warning people to protect themselves from mosquito bites and to eliminate standing water on their properties.

West Nile virus is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito.  Most of those who are infected experience mild or no symptoms, but some develop symptoms including fever, headache, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, vision loss, numbness and paralysis.

In rare cases the virus can be fatal.
